University and Colleges

"Education is one thing,

That doesn’t go waste.

It is the thing,

Not learnt in haste.

Without paying anything,

It fills or mind.

Without education we would be a useless person,

Who lives in dark even in the presence of sun."

As someone has righteously said:

"Winners take chances, they don't give up;

Winners don't blame fate for their successes.

Winners accept responsibility of their lives.

Winners are positive thinkers and believe in the

path they have chosen even when its hard.

Winners are people like you......

They make this world a better place to be."

Once you have realized that anything is possible then you will be free to see the solutions! Then you will believe that there is a miracle around every corner. You can recognize that bend in the road is not the end of the road. "Just don't give up"!!

James Cook University, JCU,Australia

James Cook University, JCU

About James Cook University

JCU – a world-class enterprise

James Cook University is Australia's leading tropical research university. We take our name from the eighteenth-century British navigator and explorer Captain James Cook, whose epic voyages contributed to the world of science. The University was proclaimed in Townsville on 20 April 1970, two hundred years after Cook charted the eastern seaboard of Australia, including northern Queensland.

The University is governed by the JCU Council, established under the James Cook University Act 1997. The Council is chaired by the Chancellor Lt Gen John Grey AC. Management of JCU is through the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sandra Harding. The University is guided by its Statement of Strategic Intent, which focuses on creating a brighter future for life in the tropics worldwide through graduates and discoveries that make a difference.

JCU is a vibrant, multi-campus university with our main sites in the tropical Queensland cities of Townsville and Cairns. We also have modern campuses in Brisbane and Singapore. There are smaller sites in Mackay, Mount Isa and Thursday Island, and we deliver our courses through education partners in Asia and the Pacific.

In a recent ranking of the world's top 500 universities, JCU was one of only 17 Australian universities listed (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Academic Ranking of World Universities 2007).

Comprehensive study options

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses span the Arts, Business, Creative Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, Information Technology and Social Sciences. We aim to give graduates the qualifications and skills they need for the global workforce. Local industries and professions contribute to course content, and many courses include work placement schemes.

Leading research

JCU’s vision is to be one of the world’s leading research universities in the tropics. JCU is home to more than 20 specialist centres and institutes, and maintains island, rainforest and outback research stations. More than $23 million in research funding is received annually. Areas of research focus include: biodiversity, sustainable management of tropical ecosystems, global warming, tropical agriculture, tropical health care in remote communities and cultural diversity.

Tropical Northern Queensland – a natural place for study

Tropical northern Queensland is a remarkable region. Townsville and Cairns are thriving coastal cities, each with populations of more than 130,000. More than two million visitors a year come to experience the World Heritage listed natural wonders in our region – the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests of the Wet Tropics. These ancient environments offer rich teaching and research opportunities for our students and staff. More and more Australian and international students are discovering the advantages of tropical Queensland as a study location. Find out more about Tropical Northern Queensland. Curtin University of Technology, Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT)

Curtin University of Technology, Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT)

In December 1986 the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT) was formally renamed Curtin University of Technology, taking its name from the influential and widely-revered former Prime Minister of Australia, John Curtin.

Remembered as a true statesman, Curtin held office during World War II from 1941-1945, when he died in office only six weeks before the Japanese surrender. He led Australia through some of its darkest years with resolute tenacity and will be remembered by Australians, regardless of their political leanings, as one of the country's greatest leaders.

Now, more than 50 years after his death, Curtin University of Technology still strives to honour John Curtin's values of vision, leadership and community service. We believe our innovative curriculum, world-class research and dedication to community service embrace John Curtin's values

University Library Australia, Council of Australian university librarians

University Library Australia, Council of Australian university librarians

The History of University Library Australia

University Library Australia came into effect 1 July 2001.

The following documents provide the background to its establishment.

CAUL Strategic Plan March, 1999"2.

Establish a framework and develop a business model for a national universities borrowing scheme."

Issues paper presented at CAUL Meeting November, 1999 - Alison Ransome (Southern Cross University)

Outline of current regional schemes in place to November 1999.

Introduction.

University Library Australia is a national borrowing scheme that allows all staff and students of all Australian universities to borrow in person from any other interstate university in Australia. The scheme is a cooperative arrangement between CAUL

member libraries.

ULA is a national scheme which complements existing regional borrowing schemes and is simple to use for both the borrower and the library staff. It aims for:

Procedures that minimise effort at home and host libraries

A free service to users (other than fees charged as penalties)

Home libraries indemnifying host libraries against problems

Service use recorded to assist future planning.

It is recommended that the guiding principles of this scheme, the vision of a free, open, simple national scheme, be considered by members of remaining regional borrowing schemes when reviewing local operations.

Host libraries retain the right to set local conditions of access, and local fees.

Potential users should check the FAQ for Borrowers to verify eligibility, host access conditions and registration conditions.

Eligibility.

All students and staff from AVCC member universities. This will include inter alia:

a. distance education students

b. students based at remote campuses ie at a campus of a university whose main campus is in another state or another metropolitan area

ULA is not intended to supplant the home institution as the primary supplier of information resources. If there is evidence that the home institution is persistently under-supporting its students, the host institution may take this up at CAUL level.

Eligibility will be as wide as possible, until proven that it is unsustainable.

All universities should note the ACRL guidelines for services to distance education students.

Authentication/Evidence.

For students.

A photo ID and proof of current enrolment.

For staff.

A photo ID and proof of current employment/affiliation.

Both are needed to establish that the borrower is the person eligible to participate in the scheme. Affiliation eg visiting scholars, must be approved by the home university library; academic affiliation is not sufficient given that it is the library that is carrying the indemnity.

In some states, TAFE members of universities may be indistinguishable from the tertiary members. This is acknowledged but not considered to have any remarkable bearing on the program.

Libraries which issue cards will be responsible for the person who holds it.

Soka University of America

Soka University of America ,SUA

Soka University of America (SUA) is an independent, non-profit, public-benefit, co-educational, comprehensive institution of higher learning. SUA serves both national and international students. Founded on the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the sanctity of life, SUA is open to students of all beliefs and is committed to diversity in its academic community.

The SUA Graduate School opened in fall 1994 in Calabasas, CA. and the SUA campus in Aliso Viejo opened in fall 2001 to its first 120 freshmen students. In 2007 the Graduate School was transferred to Aliso Viejo. Currently the university has about 400 students with plans to grow to 800 toward 2020. The student-faculty ratio is 9 to 1. Other programs, including educational access for adult students and graduate programs through the doctorate, are planned for the future.

SUA is founded on the belief that student-centered education is the best way to promote peace and human rights by fostering a global humanistic perspective on the world in which we live. The university prepares students for graduate studies and the world of work in an increasingly diverse and global society.

Classrooms are centers of dialogue and discussion, emphasizing seminar course settings. Students have many opportunities to work in small teams in the classroom and with faculty on research projects, as well as with peers in residence hall learning activities. Advanced computing and networking capabilities are widely available in all buildings and outside gathering areas, supporting a laptop computer campus. Information technology facilitates student-faculty and student-student interactions.

SUA currently offers a B.A. in Liberal Arts, with concentrations in Humanities; International Studies; Social and Behavioral Sciences; and Environmental Studies. SUA also offers an MA in Second and Foreign Language Education with a concentration in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Degree offerings and concentrations will increase as enrollment grows.

BA in Liberal Arts

The uniqueness of the BA program lies in the comparative teaching of international perspectives, the Core Curriculum and Learning Clusters and an emphasis on language, art, and culture.

Core Curriculum is a series of two sequential courses taken by all students, focusing on a range of issues related to such SUA values as peace, human rights and the creative co-existence of nature and humanity.

Learning Clusters are research seminars designed to bridge theory and practice in the investigation of a specific question, and to elicit in the way of a specific product, an educated outcome or response. Students work in teams with one or more faculty facilitators to propose, research and model constructive approaches to local, regional and/or global issues.

All SUA students concentrate on a foreign language and culture. All students participate in a semester of study abroad during their junior year.

A list of current classes may be found in the undergraduate catalog.

MA in Second and Foreign Language Education

The MA program stresses knowledge in and understanding of linguistics, teaching and learning processes and cross-cultural awareness. It provides future teachers with a curriculum that balances a sound theoretical foundation with the practical tools necessary to teach a foreign language to a non-native speaker.

The program strives to provide an academic setting that nurtures men and women from a variety of cultures and national backgrounds, who seek to learn from shared experiences. It also strives to develop critical thinking and learning and to foster a value for life long learning. To this end the program emphasizes small class sizes that cultivate a close and informal relationship among the teachers and students, rigorous academic endeavors, free and open dialogue, and an appreciation for human diversity, especially linguistic and cultural diversity.

The alumni of the graduate program currently live in more than 20 countries, mostly teaching in the field of language education (e.g.: teaching English and/or Japanese.) Some are also working in other fields utilizing their expertise in language and education (e.g.: textbook publishing, translation, public relations.)

Values

Soka University is founded upon the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the sanctity of life. Educational objectives are fostered at the university through the commitment to rigorous academic endeavors, free and open dialogue, and an appreciation for human diversity. In the Buddhist view, education is an integrating process in which students gain an awareness of the interdependence of themselves, others and the environment. Wisdom, courage and compassion - values treasured by the university -- do not exist in isolation. They emerge in individuals as they learn the importance of service to others, to the natural world around them, and to the great cause of peace and freedom.

Stanford University, America

Stanford University

The Birth of the University

In 1876, former California Governor Leland Stanford purchased 650 acres of Rancho San Francisquito for a country home and began the development of his famous Palo Alto Stock Farm. He later bought adjoining properties totaling more than 8,000 acres. The little town that was beginning to emerge near the land took the name Palo Alto (tall tree) after a giant California redwood on the bank of San Francisquito Creek. The tree itself is still there and would later become the university's symbol and centerpiece of its official seal.

The Stanford Family

Leland Stanford, who grew up and studied law in New York, moved West after the gold rush and, like many of his wealthy contemporaries, made his fortune in the railroads. He was a leader of the Republican Party, governor of California and later a U.S. senator. He and Jane had one son, who died of typhoid fever in 1884 when the family was traveling in Italy. Leland Jr. was just 15. Legend has it that the grieving couple said to one another after their son's death, "the children of California shall be our children," and they quickly set about to find a lasting way to memorialize their beloved son.

The Stanfords visited several great universities of the East to gather ideas. An urban legend, widely circulated on the Internet but untrue, describes the couple as poorly-dressed country bumpkins who decided to found their own university only after being rebuffed in their offer to endow a building at Harvard. They did visit Harvard's president but were well-received and given advice on starting a new university in California. From the outset they made some untraditional choices: the university would be coeducational, in a time when most were all-male; non-denominational, when most were associated with a religious organization; and avowedly practical, producing "cultured and useful citizens" when most were concerned only with the former.

The prediction of a New York newspaper that Stanford professors would "lecture in marble halls to empty benches" was quickly disproved. The first student body consisted of 559 men and women, and the original faculty of 15 was expanded to 49 for the second year. The university’s first president was David Starr Jordan, a graduate of Cornell, who left his post as president of Indiana University to join the adventure out West.

The Stanfords engaged Frederick Law Olmstead, the famed landscape architect who created New York’s Central Park, to design the physical plan for the university. The collaboration was contentious, but finally resulted in an organziation of quadrangles on an east-west axis. Today, as Stanford continues to expand, the university’s architects attempt to respect those original university plans.

Located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford University is recognized as one of the world's leading research and teaching institutions. http://www.stanford.edu

University of Auckland

University of Auckland

Introduction

The University of Auckland is New Zealand's pre-eminent research-led University. Established in 1883, it has grown into an international centre of learning and academic excellence and is New Zealand's largest university. More on the University's history

Its mission is to be an internationally recognised, research-led university, known for the excellence of its teaching, research, and service to its local, national and international communities. It aims to be a vibrant and intellectually challenging place of learning, nurturing a community of scholars who share a passion for discovery, the advance of knowledge and human progress.

Beginnings: 1883 - 1929

The University of Auckland was formally opened on 23 May 1883 as Auckland University College, part of the University of New Zealand. A disused courthouse and jail served as premises for the 95 students and 4 teaching staff.

The roll increased slowly but steadily during the remainder of the 19th century; by 1901 it had risen to 156 students.

Most students were enrolled part-time, training as teachers or law clerks, although after 1905 the number of commerce students rose markedly.

During this time, the University focused on teaching: research was not expected, and was rarely performed by teaching staff. Nevertheless, some students carried out impressive early research, most notably in chemistry.

Learn more about the University's history by visiting the General Library's Special Collections photographs and digitalised books

The rise of research: 1930-1940s

A surge of interest in academic research at the University arose during the depression of the early 1930s.

A lecturer in history, J. C. Beaglehole, had his temporary position terminated; friends believed this was because of a letter he wrote to a newspaper, defending the right of Communists to distribute their literature. This led to a Council election in which a liberal candidate displaced a conservative member, and Council gradually began to adopt resolutions in favour of academic freedom.

The College subsequently "came alive". For instance, a group of students, led by James Bertram, established a new literary journal, Phoenix, which became the focus for the first literary movement in New Zealand history.

The University received a further intellectual stimulus in 1934 when four new professors arrived. H.G Forder (Mathematics), Arthur Sewell (English), C. G. Cooper (Classics) and James Rutherford (History) all led the way in establishing Auckland University College as an internationally respected research institution.

Postwar expansion: 1950s-70s

The 1950s were a difficult period in the history of The University of Auckland: the roll had soared after World War II, reaching 4000 by 1959, and buildings were inadequate and overcrowded.

However, despite these problems, there was significant progress. In 1962, the abolition of the University of New Zealand saw the University finally become independent.

New subjects such as Geography, Anthropology, Maori Studies, and Fine Arts were introduced, and there was a new focus on staff research. Many of the new and younger academics became very active researchers, as evidenced by the growing lists of staff publications. Staff salaries were raised and for the first time students were given generous bursaries, resulting in a rapid increase in the proportion of full-time students.

The University undertook a massive building programme, and over the next two decades the campus was transformed as one large building after another was erected. By the end of the 1960s The University of Auckland had the largest university library in New Zealand.

New teaching subjects were introduced, including Political Studies, Art History and Sociology, and in 1968 teaching commenced in the new Medical School.

The academic boom of the sixties continued well into the seventies, and by 1970 there were 9300 students. Council focus shifted to a desire to increase student facilities, which ultimately resulted in the acquisition of a theatre, a large gymnasium and recreation centre, and a playing field complex.

The University was also quick to accept the challenges of new technological advancements of the era, introducing new subjects such as Management Studies and Computer Science.

The 1970s also brought numerous social changes, such as an increase in the proportion of Maori and Polynesian students and the numbers of female and mature students. In the years 1975-81 the first two female professors were appointed: Marie Clay and Patricia Bergquist.

Further growth: 1980s-1990s

By 1986, the roll had climbed to 13,000. Anxious to respond to a demand for University education, The University of Auckland began to offer courses at Northland Polytechnic, Manukau Polytechnic and at the Auckland College of Education.

Acquiring buildings from the Commonwealth Games Village, the University also began to develop a campus at Tamaki, initially offering courses in commerce, and then in arts and sciences.

The period of intensive new construction, begun in the 1960s, drew to a close with completion of the new School of Music in 1986 and the Marae complex in 1988. Education and the Law School moved into a new precinct in 1992.

Looking to the future: 2000 and beyond

Today, The University of Auckland is the largest university in New Zealand, hosting over 40,000 students on five Auckland campuses, with a School of Theology, and eight faculties representing each of its main disciplines: Arts, Business and Economics, Creative Arts and Industries, Education, Engineering, Law, Medical and Health Sciences, and Science. Almost all teaching staff engage in research which attempts to advance the frontiers of knowledge and understanding, and around 5000 students are enrolled for postgraduate studies, 1200 of whom are undertaking doctorates.

The University has continued to improve its facilities, with a new information and student commons complex already complete on the City Campus; new teaching and research spaces at Tamaki Campus; and a new state-of-the-art home for the Business School recently completed. History

The University of Otago, founded in 1869 by an ordinance of the Otago Provincial Council, is New Zealand's oldest university. The new University was given 100,000 acres of pastoral land as an endowment and authorised to grant degrees in Arts, Medicine, Law and Music.

The University opened in July 1871 with a staff of just three Professors, one to teach Classics and English Language and Literature, another having responsibility for Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, and the third to cover Mental and Moral Philosophy. The following year a Professor of Natural Science joined the staff. With a further endowment provided in 1872, the syllabus was widened and new lectureships established: lectures in Law started in 1873, and in 1875 courses began in Medicine. Lectures in Mining were given from 1872, and in 1878 a School of Mines was established; this later became the Department of Mineral Technology and was transferred to the University of Auckland in 1987.

The University was originally housed in a building (later the Stock Exchange) on the site of John Wickliffe House in Princes Street but it moved to its present site with the completion of the northern parts of the Clocktower and Geology buildings in 1878 and 1879. The School of Dentistry was founded in 1907 and the School of Home Science (now Consumer and Applied Sciences) in 1911. Teaching in Accountancy and Commerce subjects began in 1912. Various new chairs and lectureships were established in the years between the two world wars, and in 1946 teaching began in the Faculty of Theology. The School of Physical Education was opened in 1947.

A federal University of New Zealand was established by statute in 1870 and became the examining and degree-granting body for all New Zealand university institutions until 1961. The University of Otago had conferred just one Bachelor of Arts degree, on Mr Alexander Watt Williamson, when in 1874 it became an affiliated college of the University of New Zealand. In 1961 the University of New Zealand was disestablished, and the power to confer degrees was restored to the University of Otago by the University of Otago Amendment Act 1961.

Since 1961, when its roll was about 3,000, the University has expanded considerably (in 2002 there were some 18,000 students enrolled) and has broadened its range of courses to include undergraduate courses in Surveying, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, Education, Teaching and Physiotherapy, as well as specialised postgraduate courses in a variety of disciplines.

Government Medical College, Amritsar

Government Medical College, Amritsar

The Government Medical College Amritsar is one of the oldest and a premier medical education institute of country. It traces its foundation as a Medical School in Lahore as early as 1864 and later being established in Amritsar in 1920. The college has a cherished history and earned for itself a place of pride in the field of medical education and patient care in the region.

The launch of college website is part of conscious effort of this old yet vibrant institution in order to be a part of the technological and electronic revolution.

We set out to incorporate information technology by spearheading the setting up of an Information Technology Centre (ITC) in 2003 that generated an enthusiastic response both from the teaching faculty and students. The Centre also houses a two-way satellite linkage provided by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for implementation of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, telemedicine and networking with other premier health and health informatics institutes of the country.

The modernization drive of the college has broader dimensions. In May 2007, the foundation stone of a state-of-the-art radiotherapy centre was laid down by Honorable Mr. Tikshan Sud, Minister for Medical Education and Research, Punjab. The Centre will provide specialized care to a large number of cancer patients in this part of the country.

The launching of the college website coincides with the plans of State Government to step up quality of patient care, research and education in this college. I am confident this portal will help promote networking amongst institutions, faculty members and alumni and will showcase the research work being conducted in various departments of the college. In addition it will facilitate the provision and dissemination of information to the public.

Punjab Engineering College, Deemed University, Chandigarh

Punjab Engineering College, Deemed University, Chandigarh

After partition of the country, the Punjab College of Engineering & Technology, Lahore (formerly known as the Maclagan Engineering College) of the pre-partitioned Punjab remained in Pakistan under the name of "East Punjab Engineering College". From December 1947, it functioned in the premises of the Thomson engineering College, Roorkee now known as Indian Institute of Technology (Roorkee). In 1950, the word "East" was dropped and the college was named as "Punjab Engineering College". At the end of year 1953, the college shifted to it's own premises built at Chandigarh and started functioning here from January, 1954. In 1994 this institution was adjudged the best technical college in India by the National Foundation of Engineers. It occupies a 146-acre campus with facilities for all sorts of sports, a gymnasium and swimming pool, playing fields and numerous specialized laboratories and libraries for the various engineering disciplines. Up to 1962, the college comprised of engineering departments of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Thereafter the college expanded & five new departments in the fields of Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Production Engineering and Computer Science Engineering were added gradually.
